Cover floor, furniture, and other objects of the room
Do not start painting without covering the floor and furniture. It will be the biggest mistake if you do not cover them properly. Because it takes a lot of time and effort to remove paint spills from them.
Use a drop cloth like rosin paper to cover the floor as plastic clothes are slippery. If it is hard to shift all furniture, move all the furniture to the centre of the room. Just cover it with a drop cloth and tape it with painter tapes.
Next, remove all paintings and hooks from the wall. Also do not forget to cover the door and windows. It is better to turn off the electricity in that room. Furthur removes outlets and switches and covers the outlets and switch opening with painter’s tape.
Clean the walls before starting to paint
Always wear any old or rough clothing when you are painting. Try to paint during daylight as it is the best light for painting.
First, thoroughly check all room walls and find cracks, holes, dents, and scratches on the wall. To fill cracks, pickles, and minor dents, use painter putty. With dents, deeper than1/8 use plaster of Paris.
Scrape old paints from the walls with a paint scraper. Next, smooth the whole surface with the help of sanding paper.
If there are any strains on the wall, they will appear after paint. To achieve a strain-free look, first, wash the walls. Most commonly, painter detergent trisodium phosphate(TSP) is used to wash walls.
It is inexpensive, but you should use it carefully. First, fill your bucket with clean water, add detergent according to specified quantity and properly stir it. Dip your sponge in this solution and clean your walls with this sponge. In the end, air dry your walls.
Finally, your walls are ready for painting.
Smoothing the walls is an essential step for painting the walls otherwise, your paint will not apply smoothly.
Choose primer
If you do not use primer, your result will be dull and flat-looking walls as the surface will directly extract moisture from paints.
Additionally, it has other benefits, like it creates a smooth base for paint, so the paint will easily stick to walls. Moreover, if strains are not disappeared even after washing walls with TSP primer, it will hide all blemishes from the wall.
White primer is used if your walls are already blemish-free and you are coating a light or neutral color.
Use a tinted primer as they are better in bidding any patch and previous paint. Additionally, by applying tinted primer, your finish look will be brighter, and you have to apply fewer paint coats.
Prepare your paint
Use a bucket to mix all paint, especially if you are using more than 1 gallon. Stir properly with a wooden paint stick. However, it will be good to have an extra bucket as mixed paint does not remain fresh after some time. You have to pour paints in both buckets as paint material sits down at the bottom.
While preparing your paint, add a paint extender like Floetrol. It will not dry the paints and level all paint evenly. Extender limit is given at the back of the can so add accordingly. Stir the paint for about 5 minutes before painting.
Cutting-in process
In painting, it is a process of painting the boundaries that cannot be painted by rollers. Most expert painters prefer the cutting process rather than painter’s tape. As it is cheaper, there is less waste of paint material, and the finished look is neater.
Just take an angled brush cover its upper portion with paint. Gradually start painting the edges that are usually not covered by paint.
Start painting the room.
First, dip the roller in the paint bucket. Do not overload your roller. Just check that your roller is fully covered with paint.
Start from a corner. Now paint your room in ‘W” shape. This is the best painting technique because it gives maximum coverage. Furthur quickly fills the ”W”. Apply a second coat on the wall when the first coat is dry.
Open up all windows of the room for ventilation. It will also help to dry the paint quickly.
After painting the room, clean up the whole room, remove any paint spills, painter tape, and drop cloths.
